Description of Cyanotype Process
The cyanotype process is a photographic process. Two chemicals, ammonium iron(lll) citrate and potassium ferricyanide, are combined to create a UV light sensitive solution. The solution is applied to a surface like paper or fabric. An object is placed on the treated surface and exposed to a UV light source, like the sun. After a certain amount of time the object is removed and the paper or fabric is rinsed in water. This stops the developing process and creates a permanent image. Places on the print that are white blocked the light from coming through. Areas in blue are places where light was able to penetrate the object or bend around the object. This type of photograph is called a photogram. It is a true to life image of whatever has been placed on the paper or fabric.
Due to the unique qualities of the process please allow for natural variations. Each scarf is one of kind and can not be exactly replicated. I have done my best to represent the item as accurately as possible, however please allow that individual screens may display color differently.
Care and Washing Instructions for Cyanotype Scarves
I have prewashed the scarves according to the following directions and did not experience any bleeding, however dyed rayon does have the potential to bleed.
Please use a warm dry iron. Iron on the wrong side of fabric. Do not use steam.
Please do not use a detergent containing phosphates, sodium or bleach. Do not use any type of alkaline washing agent. Improper washing could cause the scarf to lose its vibrancy permanently or cause yellowing of the image. Hand wash only in cold water with a small amount of your chosen detergent. I have used Ivory Snow detergent to wash printed scarves with great success. Included are two samples of treated fabric for testing your detergent. Place a dab of the detergent you wish to test in the middle of the fabric sample. If the fabric turns yellow or starts to fade your detergent is not suitable for washing. Lay flat to dry. Do not dry in the sun. Do not dry clean.
Exposure to perspiration is not advised.
Fading may occur in strong direct sunlight. This is a natural part of the process. Place the scarf in a dark location and within a few hours it will return to its original color.
